Titanite, also known as Chrome Titanite or Chrome Sphene, is the chromium
(Cr) rich variety of Titanite.
The chromium causes this variety to be colored intensly,
vivid green. Titanite is normally colorless, brown, pale
to medium green, yellow, rose-red or black. Green Titanite
is not normally as intensly or vividly green as
Chromian Titanite. Crystals are beautiful and faceted
gems are spectacular with extreme dispersion, very high
birefringence and intense green color.
main source of Chromian Titanite is the Saranovskii Mine, Saranovskaya Village, Gornozavodskii area,
Permskaya Oblast', Middle Urals Region, Russia. Associated minerals at this
locality include Calcite, Chlorite Group minerals, and Millerite.
There are some deep green Titanite crystals coming out
of the Haramosh Mts., Skardu District, Baltistan, Gilgit-Baltistan (Northern Areas), Pakistan
but these are not Chromian Titanite and they are not
nearly as vividly colored.
