Henmilite is named to honor Professor Kitinosuke Henmi (1919–1997), and his daughter Dr. Chiyoko Henmi (1949– ), Department of Earth Science, Okayama University, Okayama, Japan, in recognition of their mineralogical work on the skarn deposit at Fuka, Japan.

Discovered in 1981;   IMA status:  Valid (IMA approved 1986)

Henmilite is a very rare borate mineral that comes from only one location in the world; the Fuka mine, near Bicchu-cho, Takahashi, Okayama Prefecture, Chugoku Region, Honshu Island, Japan. The crystals are usually very small, to about 3 mm, and a very beautiful vivid bluish violet to purple color. Faceted gems are extremely rare due to the small size of the crystals, the fact that they are very soft (Mohs hardness of 1.5 - 2.0) and they are very fragile.
