Fuchsite was named in 1842 by Karl F. E. von Schafhault in honor of Johann Nepomuk von Fuchs (May 15, 1774 - March 5, 1856) professor of chemistry and mineralogy at University of Landshut and curator of the mineralogy collection.

Fuchsite is a green, chromium-rich variety of
Muscovite. Muscovite (also known as common mica) is a common rock forming mineral found in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Mariposite is also a chromium-rich type of Muscovite. Another "variety" of green Muscovite is Verdite. Verdite is a trade name for a green ornamental stone, primarily an impure Fuchsite originally from North Kaap river, Kaap Station, South Africa. Impurities in Verdite include Albite, Chlorite, Corundum, Diaspore, Margarite, Quartz, Rutile and Talc.
